John M. Swales is Pro­fessor Eme­ritus of Lin­guistics at the Uni­versity of Michigan, where he was also Director of the English Lan­guage Ins­titute from 1985 to 2001. He was faculty advisor for both the MICASE and MICUSP corpus pro­jects. To date, he has written or co-​​written over 20 books and a hundred research articles or book chapters. His 1990 Genre Ana­lysis (Cam­bridge, 1990) continues to be one of the most fre­quently cited works on aca­demic dis­course, and has ins­pired and empo­wered gene­ra­tions of stu­dents and resear­chers to sys­te­matise their obser­va­tions about aca­demic texts. Other signi­ficant works include Aca­demic Writing for Gra­duate Stu­dents (with Christine Feak) (Michigan, 1994, 2004), Other Floors, Other Voices (Erlbaum, 1998) and Research Genres (Cam­bridge, 2004). Although offi­cially retired, he remains active with research pro­jects, doc­toral advising, and confe­rence pre­sen­ta­tions (typi­cally ple­naries). In 2011, for example, he gave talks and lec­tures in England, Italy, Poland and China as well as in the U.S. In 2004, he was awarded an honorary PhD by the Uni­versity of Uppsala.
