Area of interest

Area of interest :

My work focuses on the linguistic description of space. How do we express the spatial relationships that enable us to describe the world, to situate one thing in relation to another? How are our spatial representations encoded in languages? Are they specific to languages or, on the contrary, do they escape the specificity of languages?
To answer these questions, I adopt a cognitive and functionalist approach, studying the expression of space in languages from a typological and contrastive perspective.
I am particularly focused on the expression of dynamic spatial relations, i.e. the interaction of space and time in the expression of motion. I tackle these issues by studying the interaction of verbs, adpositions and nouns to characterise the spatial and aspectual structure of events. I am also interested in the relationship between space and the expression of existence, and more particularly in the role of space in anchoring new referents in discourse.

My research focuses on the following areas:

– The verbal lexicon of space (motion verbs)
– Nominalizations: verbal vs. nominal expression of space and motion.
– Typological study of relations between space, time and existence (relations between localisation and (in) definiteness).
– Existential constructions
– Role of perception in the expression of space and existence/presence
– Distinction between argument and adjunct: status of locatives
– Transitivity in language and discourse
– Initial position and its role in sentence and text.
– Grammaticalisation of spatial markers into discourse markers.
– Metaphor: from space to other domains
