Throughout October 2023, Alexandre François is a visiting professor at the University of Brasília, the capital of Brazil. This exchange visit, organized by linguist Dr Thiago Chacon, is enabling academic cooperation with researchers and doctoral students from the “Núcleo de Tipologia e Línguas Indígenas” (Center of Typology and Indigenous Languages of Brazil).

While participating in various seminars and working groups, A. François will deliver a series of nine lectures on the topic:  “Descrição, Tipologia e Linguística Histórica: entre a Melanésia e a Amazônia”  (Description, typology and historical linguistics: between Melanesia and Amazonia). This is the occasion to present the work he is developing at Lattice, whether his research on Pacific languages, or his recent EvoSem project around universals of lexical change.

Finally, in the perspective of a comparison with Amazonian languages, François’s stay also provides him with the opportunity to work with speakers of Tukano, an endangered language spoken in the Amazon on the border between Brazil and Colombia.
