Présentation

Après une formation en Lettres Classiques (ENS–Ulm 1992, Agrégation de Grammaire 1995), j’ai soutenu ma thèse de Linguistique en 2001, à Paris IV Sorbonne. Depuis 2002, je suis chercheur au CNRS – d’abord au LaCiTO (2002–2018), et désormais au LaTTiCe, où je suis Directeur de recherche. En parallèle, je suis Honorary Associate Professor à l’Université nationale australienne.

Ma recherche porte sur la description et comparaison des langues océaniennes de Mélanésie insulaire, en particulier celles qui sont parlées au Vanuatu et aux îles Salomon. Je m’attache à décrire ces langues dans leurs grammaires autant que leurs lexiques, dans l’esprit de la typologie linguistique et la quête des universaux.

Les enregistrements que j’ai effectués sur le terrain sont tous archivés en ligne. Outre leur valeur littéraire et anthropologique, mes corpus de textes constituent également une base empirique pour l’analyse linguistique de ces langues.

Mon travail consiste à décrire ces systèmes linguistiques en synchronie ; mais aussi de reconstruire les différents paramètres de leurs dynamiques – qu’ils soient sociaux, anthropologiques, pragmatiques, cognitifs, aréaux ou autres. Enfin, je tire parti de mes observations sur les langues de Mélanésie, pour proposer une réflexion générale sur les divers facteurs qui conditionnent le changement linguistique dans les langues du monde.

En 2022-25, je co-dirige le projet franco-allemand “ComPLETE” (“Complex Predicates in Languages: Emergence, Typology, Evolution”) sur la typologie des prédicats complexes.
